Ukemi - The Art of Falling: Double Open Call

Ukemi - The Art of Falling will be a parkour and circus show about the process of taking a risk. It is preceded by a Lab week for experimentation, exchange and research both of which can be applied for.

We will be working theatrically and physically with themes such as how to prepare for risky situations, how to fall safely, how to turn the failures into something positive and finally, how to support each other during the whole process. Physically we will look at spotting techniques, bail techniques, parkour elements, partner acrobatics and other circus techniques. I want to play a lot with expectations during this show. The expectations of success that turn anticlimatic, the falls that create wonder, the bails that look dangerous but are actually safe. I want to move in between the fun of falling and the vulnerability and intense focus of working with risk. The show will be 20-30 minutes long.

The show will be played on a parkour structure covering an area of about 3x4 meters. The show is aimed at teenagers, but also broad audiences, and will be played outside at festivals, events and for schools.

We will be rehearsing at the Rotterdam based location of Rush World, West center (see pictures).

It is financially supported by Gemeente Rotterdam, Theater Zuidplein & Amarte Foundation. It will perform through Volkstheater Rotterdam and Circusstad Stadsparade.
